Sculpture by the Sea is a major annual outdoor sculpture exhibition that is open to the public for no cost, featuring sculptures made by Australian and international artists. The exhibition, held annually during summer in the Southern Hemisphere, commenced at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia in 1997 with an exhibition held over one day at Bondi Beach and is now an annual event, held over the first three weeks of November. Every year the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk is transformed into a seaside art gallery as the works of sculpture are spread across the cliff walk from Tamarama Beach to Bondi Beach. Over 100 sculptures are exhibited in the background of sea and the coastal landscape along the two kilometre coastal walk. Sculpture by the Sea at Bondi attracts an estimated annual attendance of 500,000 people each year to view the sculptures. An indoor exhibition of works is held in Mark’s Park, at Tamarama where exhibited items may be purchased.
The exhibition expanded to Cottesloe Beach in Perth, Western Australia in 2005; and in 2009 the first Sculpture by the Sea exhibition outside of Australia was held in Aarhus, Denmark under the patronage of The Crown Prince and Crown Princess of Denmark.
